Starlink midweek updates: Opensignal rural UK study and the PLEO install that delivers

An Opensignal study published this week put Starlink ahead of EE, Three and Vodafone 4G and 5G home broadband for rural UK speed and consistency. The kit still only performs as well as the install allows.

What a PLEO install gets UK customers

PLEO means Professional Low Earth Orbit. It is the difference between a dish that just sits on a roof and a fit that is built to last:

  • Custom installs on quality galvanised brackets and alloy masts

  • Cat6 made to fit on site, weatherproofed and routed neatly into the building

  • Bespoke setups and full network services: mesh, outdoor access points and Wi-Fi calling where mobile signal is poor

  • Listed buildings, lodges, static caravans, residential and commercial properties

  • Health and safety and professional standards on every job

Space Internet Solutions has skilled PLEO installers nationwide across the UK for Starlink and Amazon Leo.

This week's verified Starlink news for the UK

Opensignal compared Starlink with 4G and 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) home broadband across 14 European markets, using crowdsourced app data from April to June 2026. ISPreview summarised the UK figures on 13 October 2026:

  • In rural UK, Starlink averaged 80.8 Mbps download. The best rural FWA result among the mobile operators was Three at 32.4 Mbps.

  • Starlink's Consistent Quality score was 68.1% in both urban and rural areas. That beat EE's rural FWA score of 62.1% and sat level with the strongest urban FWA CQ scores.

  • Across all 14 markets, Starlink was the fastest rural option, measuring about twice the average rural FWA speed.

  • In UK towns and cities the picture is more mixed: Three led urban FWA downloads at 81.2 Mbps, roughly on par with Starlink's 80.8 Mbps.

Opensignal only measured mobile-network FWA (Three, Vodafone, EE and similar). It did not include dedicated wireless networks that use other bands, so those results are a useful guide rather than the whole market. Rural FWA is still limited by mast density and spectrum, which take years to expand.

A second Opensignal map this month also showed where UK smartphones connect to Starlink's direct-to-device satellites via O2 Satellite. That is a basic remote roaming add-on, not a home broadband substitute, but it underlines how LEO coverage is spreading beyond the dish.

Why the install still decides the outcome

Crowdsourced averages only hold up when the dish has a clear sky view, a solid mount and a tidy cable run. A plastic mount that shifts in a gale, a cable kinked through a window or a dish half-blocked by trees will throw away the rural advantage those figures describe.

That is what PLEO work is for: right bracket for the fabric of the building, cable cut and terminated on site, network finished so every room (or yard) actually gets the service you are paying for.
